Last Friday, Mrs. Bridges’ Chemistry classes learned about scientific notation, significant figures, and dimensional analysis. Students were able to figure out Grandma’s secret fudge recipe by converting different units for all of the ingredients. It was a tasty and fun lab for all!

Mrs. Hamby’s ECE2 students created an interactive poster board timeline to explore the History of Education. This hands-on project helped students connect past milestones in education to the progress we see today, while practicing collaboration and presentation skills.

Mrs. Griffin’s 10th grade students worked in groups to modernize Shakespeare’s Hamlet into a family group chat, taking turns “texting” on paper back and forth as the characters in the play. Love the creativity involved in putting a modern spin on a classic.

Great Southeast Pollinator Census on Saturday August 23rd is an annual citizen science event for people of all ages. This is a fairly easy activity; participants don’t need to know much about insects. Jennifer Whittington, DNR wildlife biologist, will lead this activity, with support from the local chapter of GA Native Plant Society and Monarchs Across GA. You can find additional information and resources at https://gsepc.org/.

Ms. Leverett and Mrs.Apperson’s first block British Literature class worked in small groups to analyze Beowulf. Beowulf is a difficult British poem that dates back to 400 AD, and is often considered the original “Hero” story! Ms.Leverett and Mrs.Apperson’s students worked hard to understand the text and apply their knowledge, and they are very proud of them!

Last week in Physical Science, our 9th graders kicked off the year with the Penny Lab challenge in Mrs. Carter's class. They tested how many drops of clean water vs. soapy water a penny could hold, putting their scientific method knowledge and lab skills to work! It was a great start to the year! Can't wait to see what's next!

We would like to thank the Irwin County Hospital for their support of your schools. Employees and board members of Irwin County Hospital held a school supply drive for Irwin County Elementary School. ICH is always looking for ways to give back to our community, and stated, "supporting our youth through collecting school supplies is something we have grown fond of doing! " Again, thank you for your ongoing support of ICSS.

Congratulations to Justin Pope, a standouting ICHS student and active participant in Irwin County FFA!

Through his Supervised Agricultural Experience in agricultural production and diversified agriculture, Justin earned the opportunity to compete in the National FFA Proficiency Award Program. He was named a state finalist in April, and this morning, he’s officially been named a NATIONAL FINALIST!

Justin will now represent Irwin County as he competes in an interview process against three other finalists from across the country for the top honor in his SAE category of Diversified Agriculture Production.

He’ll take the national stage in Indianapolis, Indiana this October during the National FFA Convention.

Once again—congratulations, Justin Pope! This is an outstanding achievement, and we are so proud of how you represent Irwin County FFA.

Irwin County High School Alumni Spotlight: Dr. Ashli Pope Ross, Class of 2009

We are proud to feature Dr. Ashli Pope Ross, a 2009 graduate of Irwin County High School, whose dedication to animal care and service to the agricultural community is both inspiring and impactful.

During her senior year at ICHS, Ashli was selected as one of only five Georgia seniors for the Food Animal Veterinary Incentive Program, guaranteeing her acceptance into the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. She credits Mrs. Dianne Tucker, who worked in the high school guidance office, for helping her discover and apply for this life-changing opportunity.

After earning her veterinary degree, Dr. Ross began her career at Quailwood Animal Hospital in Tifton before launching her own practice—Double R Veterinary Service, a mobile large animal practice. Her commitment to animal health often leads her to travel two to three hours to reach those in need, making her a vital resource for farmers and ranchers across South Georgia.

A proud former FFA President during her time at Irwin, Ashli continues to give back to her roots. She supports the ICHS Ag Department, helps with show pig testing, participates in 5th Grade Ag Day, and performs weekly spay and neuter surgeries at the Douglas Animal Shelter. She also volunteers as the on-site vet for the annual ABAC Rodeo and has co-sponsored bull testing clinics to support local livestock producers.

Dr. Ross is married to Zachary Ross, also an Irwin County alum, and together they are raising two children, Rhett and Ridley Ross. She attributes much of her work ethic and passion to her upbringing—helping her father, Tim Pope, on the farm—and to the guidance of the late Dr. Ray Clayton, who helped spark her interest in veterinary medicine.
Above all, Ashli gives glory to Jesus Christ for her success and is forever thankful for the “village” that helped raise her.

We celebrate Dr. Ashli Pope Ross for her commitment to her community, her profession, and the values that began right here in Irwin County.
