Football Game Update
Students in Mrs. Spell’s ECE 1 class designed 3-D models of toys that encourage development of infants. They also made a specifications sheet and advertisement for each toy.
Mrs. Spell’s Food Science class recently conducted an experiment to determine which preservation method worked best for strawberries. Students tested salt curing, sugar curing, open air, and sealed bags to see which method would preserve the strawberries the longest.

Students in Mrs. Spell’s ECE 2 class have been visiting the elementary school to gain hands-on experience working with younger children. Last Friday, they had the opportunity to work in a small-group setting and implement a lesson they had previously designed in class.

To locate your child's photos, you'll need their Student ID or Portrait ID and Access Code. If you don't have this information, you can:

ANNOUNCEMENT OF SOLE FINALIST- IRWIN COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM SUPERINTENDENT
The Irwin County Board of Education is pleased to announce that Michael Heitzman has been named the Sole Finalist for Superintendent of the Irwin County School System.
Mr. Heitzman currently serves as the Principal of Ben Hill Middle School, a position he has held since 2021. Prior to becoming principal, he served as an assistant principal at Fitzgerald High School, Upper School Principal at Tiftarea Academy, and teacher and coach at Fitzgerald High School. He began his educational career as a teacher and coach in Duval County Public Schools.
A resident of Irwin County, Mr. Heitzman brings a strong understanding of the community and a broad range of educational leadership experience. His educational preparation includes a Specialist Degree and Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Valdosta State University, as well as a bachelor’s degree in Social Science Education from Illinois State University.
During his tenure as principal of Ben Hill Middle School, Mr. Heitzman has been responsible for instructional leadership, school operations, personnel, budgeting, professional development, school improvement, strategic planning, leadership development, and community relations. His application highlights improvements in student achievement, school climate, staff retention, student recruitment, and the implementation of professional learning communities.
In his application, Mr. Heitzman identified student achievement, strong professional learning communities, fiscal responsibility, transparency, leadership development, and meaningful relationships with stakeholders as central priorities for his leadership. He also expressed a commitment to maintaining an open line of communication with the Board, employees, families, students, and the broader Irwin County community.
Mr. Heitzman stated that his goal would be to build upon the strengths of Irwin County Schools while working collaboratively with the Board, school leaders, educators, families, and community members to continue improving the educational opportunities and outcomes for every student.
The Board appreciates the participation and interest of all individuals who were involved in the superintendent search process. The Board looks forward to continuing its work with the Irwin County community as it moves through the final stages of the superintendent selection process.

The Irwin Middle School Cross Country team competed in the Tift County Invitational this weekend and represented Irwin well against a field of 20+ schools, including many schools from higher classifications.
Our athletes battled through a competitive field and continued to show growth, determination, and improvement throughout the season.

The Irwin High School Cross Country teams competed in the Tift County Invitational this weekend, taking on 20+ schools, many of which compete in higher classifications. A’rihanna Wynn, Makenzie Wynn, and Chloe Ruelas competed against a field of 151 runners and put together outstanding performances. All three athletes recorded personal-best times! Lane Pylant and Ben Bowles competed in a challenging field of 168 runners and ran strong races. While neither athlete recorded a personal best, both improved upon their previous times on the Tifton course from last year! The progress is showing, and our Indians continue to compete, improve, and represent Irwin with pride!
